After starting the 2006 spring season with just one win in its first four games, the Boston University club baseball team has found its way back to .500 thanks to some newer faces and resurgence from a few old reliable.
Slugging their way to mercy-rule wins over Northeastern University (20-7) and Division III Mass Bay Community College (14-4), the Terriers have again found their hitting stroke. And – to no one’s surprise – junior Peter Lawn is leading the way. Lawn (San Francisco, Calif.) went 6-for-7 in the two wins, connected for two triples and a double, and scored seven times. On the spring so far, the former NECBA MVP is hitting a team-high .526.
But he’s hardly alone in terms of production. Freshman Chris McIsaac (Barnstable, Mass.) has eight hits over his last three games, and is hitting .450 while he emerges as part of BU’s bright future in the infield. First-year sophomores Dan Piorkowski (Trumbull, Conn.), Alex Lambert (Londonderry, N.H.) and Jon Mastroianni (Monson, Mass.) have also impressed, each hitting at least .333 and combining to make only four errors in 56 chances.
BU’s veteran outfield is holding its own on both sides of the lines, as well, with Lawn’s output bolstered by big springs from seniors Nando Trindade (North Branford, Conn.) and Craig O’Connell (Stormville, N.Y.). Trindade has five RBI to go with a .375 batting average and eight runs scored, while O’Connell has crossed the plate seven times and is hitting .421. Junior Quinn Duffy (San Francisco, Calif.) has shown himself to be a valuable offensive asset, as well, going 3-for-4 against Northeastern and hitting .375 overall.
Duffy has also excelled out of the bullpen, working precisely from the south side of the rubber and carrying a 0.78 earned run average through three appearances and nine innings. Only freshman Randy Forrester (Hopewell, N.J.) and junior Jeff Border (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) have worked more innings than Duffy, each taking the ball and turning it into outs. Forrester’s ERA is a solid 3.00 after picking up a win against Mass Bay, in his first career start, and while Border is winless, he did throw eight innings in a 2-1 loss to the University of New Hampshire that was eventually decided in the 12th inning.
As a team, BU boasts an ERA of 3.60, and is hitting .338, as it enters the home stretch of its slate. The Terriers will play Emerson College on April 22 at Rogers Park, before winding things down next week hosting the University of Massachusetts on April 28, and holding the annual season-ending intrasquad scrimmage a day later.
Then it will be on to the National Club Baseball Association for BU, which enters the league this fall. |
