Title Defense Starts Strong

Hello, and welcome to Boston University Baseball’s first edition of Terrier Baseball ENews.

About half way through the season we are proving that we are still the team to beat.  We have bullied ourselves into first place in the New England Club Baseball Association (NECBA) South Division.  Boasting a 6-1 record we rely on our outstanding pitching and timely hitting.

The offense stole the show at last weekend’s Interleague Tournament against the North Division University of Maine (2-4), University of New Hampshire (2-2), and University of New England (4-2).

Peter Lawn, junior centerfielder and leadoff hitter, set the tone hitting .583 with 1 HR, 4 doubles, 5 runs, and 4 RBI over the weekend.  The rest of the line up followed highlighted by sophomore right fielder Mike Carozza who hit .545 and scored 5 runs during the three game tournament set.  Still, the biggest buzz was generated by the bat of senior Craig O’Connell whose two homeruns – one soaring over the right-centerfield fence into a set of bleachers sitting over 400 feet away – sparked us to a 9-6 victory over UNE.

Unfortunately, the strong offensive showing was not enough to overcome UNH.  The Wildcats surged for 5 runs in the 7th inning to win 11-8 and hand us our first regular season loss since early last fall.

The bitter taste of that seesaw battle will linger with us this Sunday, October 2, as we look to clinch a playoff spot and put a strangle hold on the division in a double header against The College of the Holly Cross (4-3).  The Crusaders are lurking only two games back and are swinging hot bats, but our pitching staff is our greatest strength.
