Annual Columbus Day Reunion Swims On

The rain wouldn’t go away, but neither would the alumni, as the Boston University baseball reunion this past weekend was still a flood of success.

Thank you to the dozens of alumni representing the eras of varsity and club, from the 1960s through today, from California to Florida to Virginia Beach to Boston and through Maine, joined together again to relive old memories and create new ones.

Despite the nasty interference from Mother Nature, which canceled every game this weekend – including the centerpiece of the weekend, the Alumni vs. Today game, scheduled for Sunday – the weekend had lasting effects.

On Sunday, at the Sidd Lounge at Walter Brown Arena, we brought teammates young and old together for conversation, reminiscing and lunch – all equal draws. There, we were able to honor Earle Leeder, one of the foremost members of our support group over the past few years, with an award in his honor. The Earle Leeder Award, presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the spirit of BU baseball, went retroactively to Lazar Berman (2001-02), Sean Grieve (2002-03), Todd Stankiewicz (2003-04) and Jason Factor (2004-05).  The contributions of these four, among many others, have allowed the club program to ascend to unprecedented heights.  After lunch we met at the Track and Tennis Center to come together for Wiffleball, making sure that competition was not totally washed out.

Currently, we sit at 7-1, tops in the New England Club Baseball Association (NECBA). Having clinched a playoff berth with our win over Holy Cross on Oct. 2, we look to continue to improve as we move to defend our NECBA title, the first in club history, this weekend against Emerson University.

We are already looking forward to next year’s reunion, and will try to make arrangements with the weather ahead of time.
