William Tighe

A two-sport standout at Boston University, William Tighe's athletic career has been marked by considerable success at a variety of levels.

The starting third baseman during his sophomore yer in 1947. Tighe was forced into pitching rotation to help solidify a depleted staff, and immediateky responded by twirling a no-hitter en route to a perfect 3-0 record.

Bill became a starting pitcher his junior and senior years and was elected captain in 1949, his senior year. His B.U. career pitching record was 15-2.

In football Bill was the starting Terrier quarterback and free safety in his junior and senior years. His two year record was 11-5.

Bill has coached high school football for 58 years at Wakefield, Malden, and now at Lexington High School for the past 34 of those years.

Bill is the oldest active high school football coach in America. He has earned many rewards and championships.

Following graduation, Bill played for the St. Johnsbury (VT) Professional Baseball Team of the Northern League before commencing his highly-successful high school football coaching career.

Bill received offers to play football for the New York Yankees of the short lived “All American Football Conference” and to sign a professional baseball contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. He declined because the promises of financial security in professional sports were not as attractive then as they are today.

Bill Tighe was named by coach Harry Cleverly as one of three pitchers on Cleverly’s All-Time baseball Team.
