Tim was one of the finest pitchers in the history of Boston University baseball. The ace of the staff for four years, his career record at B.U. was 16-4.
As a freshman he was undefeated going 3-0 , striking out 19 in one game and 10 in another.
In 1967, his sophomore year, Tim’s record was 3-2 . In the first game of the 1967 season, although B.U. had not yet practiced outside due to bad weather, he struck out 10, beating The Citadel in the South Carolina Tournament .
In 1968 he led the B.U. nine to its first ever NCAA tournament appearance. His record that year was 5-1 and his 0.85 ERA was one of the lowest in the country. He was named a Greater Boston League All-Star and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in this his junior year.
In 1969, while posting a record of 5-1 and an ERA of 0.48, Tim was again named to the greater Boston League All-Star Team and again pitched B.U. into the NCAA Tournament. In the first game of the Tournament against Dartmouth, he pitched 10 1/3 innings of relief on two days rest. He lost 13 pounds in the heat but he won the game. His team in 1969 came within one out of advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, NE. At B.U. recognition Night 1969, Tim was one of three athletes to receive the “Man of the Year” award.
Tim signed a professional contract with the St Louis Cardinals upon graduating.
Prior to coming to B.U. ,Tim played on three consecutive State Championship teams at Trenton, NJ H.S. where he won All-State honors.
In two years of American Legion Baseball in NJ he compiled a record of 18-0 while hurling 38 2/3 consecutive innings, a record that would stand for over 15 years. |
