Tom Gastall was Boston University's 1955 Athlete of the Year. He was captain on both the basketball and baseball teams in his senior year, while leading the football team to a 7-2 record as the team's quarterback.
In baseball, Tom was known for both his catching prowess and his power at the plate. He hit several legendary home runs at Braves Field, one of the hardest stadiums in the country in which to hit one out. One of his home runs hit a light tower after soaring over the wall.
Upon graduating he was drafted by the Detroit Lions of the NFL, but instead chose to play baseball. He became a “bonus baby”, signing a staggering $40,000 contract with the Baltimore Orioles in 1955, an unheard of signing bonus in the 1950s. He caught in the major leagues in both 1955 and 1956.
He died in on September 20,1956 when the plane he was piloting crashed into Chesapeake Bay.
Tom was named by Coach Harry Cleverly as the catcher on his All-Time Baseball Team. |
